Questions to Ask When Choosing Community-Based Support

What do normal days look like, and how are decisions made? Are there enough trained staff for consistent support?

Clarity on schedules, supervision, and communication channels can prevent future gaps in care. Families should also consider how they can support the transition to community living.

Understanding the daily rhythm helps families feel confident that their loved one is in a safe and nurturing environment.

How does the community include families, and how are concerns handled? Look for transparent feedback systems and clear escalation paths.

Strong programs can explain both their values and their safeguards. They often emphasize consistent routines as a way to ensure both safety and personal development.

Accountability is not just about rules; it's about a shared commitment to the well-being of every community member.

Ask who receives safeguarding training, how recently, and who delivers it. A good answer is specific. Our own most recent training was a workshop for volunteers and board members led by Fr. James Gascon, SJ in August 2025.

Ask how a concern gets raised and what happens next. Ask whether anyone outside the organisation is involved in reviewing serious concerns. Hesitation here is worth paying attention to.

Ask what proportion of donations reaches direct care, and ask to see it written down. For reference, we allocate roughly 60% to direct care and support, 20% to educational programmes, 15% to facility maintenance, and 5% to operations and support.

Ask whether annual reports and financial statements are available on request, and then actually request them. An organisation that is comfortable being asked is telling you something useful.
