How Companies Can Do Values-Aligned Community Engagement

One-off events may raise awareness, but sustained partnerships drive stronger outcomes. Multi-month plans allow trust and measurable impact to develop.

A predictable cadence of visits, volunteering, and resource support helps partners plan effectively. Our experience shows long-term partnerships create deeper impact.

Companies that return regularly are also better partners for core members. Familiar faces build trust in a way that rotating volunteers cannot replicate.

Skills-based volunteering can be especially effective when scoped with community teams. Administrative, digital, or training support can strengthen operations.

The best engagements are co-designed and reviewed jointly to improve over time. Companies can also benefit from planning visits that center dignity.

Avoid assigning volunteers to tasks based solely on what the company finds convenient. Start by asking the community what they actually need, and build from there.

In September 2025, employees from Beiersdorf (NIVEA Group) spent a day with our community. They had first learned about L'Arche through the Project Inclusion group. During the visit, members of L'Arche taught them how to make beads, and the employees then purchased some of the finished products. They also toured the house and workshop area to get to know the community properly.

Three things made that day work. Core members were the instructors. Money moved through a purchase rather than only a donation, which treats the community as a producer rather than a recipient. And the visitors spent time in the actual living and working spaces instead of a function room.

Avoid activities where employees perform a service on the community — repainting a wall while residents watch produces photographs but not relationships.

Avoid arriving with a fully designed programme. Ask the community what would genuinely help and what they would like to teach, then build the day around that answer.

Avoid treating the visit as complete when the bus leaves. Buying what the community produces, returning next year, and introducing other partners are what convert a good day into a partnership.
